Marathon Motel is the perfect place for stargazers to visit:
First and foremost, weather.
The desert climate makes for a lot of sunny days and clear nights,
so obviously this heightens ones chance of a clear sky.
Second, and just as important, is light pollution.
It is increasingly difficult to find pristine dark skies in
the Eastern US
Light Pollution in the US
...but here's West Texas:
The Big Bend region is not only dark, it's as dark as it gets!
Thirdly, latitude.
Being further south also helps stargazers find objects that
they can't see further north. The cluster I sent a picture of,
Omega Centauri, simply doesn't get far enough above the horizon
in most of the country.
And Fourth:
Recent renovations incorporate ground level, down turned, and
other forms of low lighting in order to preserve the pristine
viewing conditions of the Marathon Motel.
