MotelThe Marathon Motel was built circa 1940 by the Preston Family. Though it has had a succession of owners of managers through the years, it has been in continuous operation. At the time it was featured in the 1984 movie. "Paris Texas", the motel was falling into considerable disrepair.

MotelJohn and Mary Hoover of San Angelo, Texas bought the Motel in 1987 as a retirement "Fixer-Upper" project; therefore their interests were focused more toward renovating the motel than operating or promoting it. The improvements made over their 13 years of ownership consisted of general upgrades/modernizing of the motel such as, re-wiring, re-carpeting, replacing plumbing fixtures, as well as cosmetic improvements both inside and outside of each cabin. Other improvements included building the current laundry room, and making significant improvements to the office. In addition all mattresses, box-springs and bedding, were replaced, as well as the implementation of new guidelines for housekeeping, thereby improving the overall comfort and function of the motel.

Daniel Self of Austin, Texas purchased the motel in August 2000 with the intention to continue the work the Hoovers had begun. Recognizing the care and attention shown in the renovations to the motel itself, he decided to focus his attention toward the addition of amenities in an effort to improve the overall appearance and appeal of the property, and enhance guest comfort and enjoyment. Construction on his contributions began in April 2001.
