Big Bend National Park surpasses visitor record

PANTHER JUNCTION, TEXAS - Authorities say 2005 drew more people to Big Bend National Park than ever before. Park officials attribute the increase to media exposure and the Internet. Last year, nearly 401,000 people visited the park in Texas. That eclipses the 1976 record of 378,000 visitors. The land that's now part of Big Bend National Park was largely purchased by Texas in the early 1940's. It was established June 12th of 1944. Since then, annual visitor numbers have topped 300,000 numerous times
